Dryland Rivers: Processes and Forms
نویسنده
چکیده
Dryland alluvial rivers vary considerably in character. In terms of processes, high energy, sediment-laden flash floods in upland rivers contrast dramatically with the low sediment loads and languid flows of their lowland counterparts while from a form perspective, the unstable wide, shallow and sandy braid plains of piedmont rivers are quite different from the relatively stable, narrow, deep and muddy channels of anastomosing systems (Nanson et al. 2002). It is also apparent that few, if any, morphological features are unique to dryland rivers. The variety of dryland river forms and the absence of a set of defining dryland river characteristics makes it difficult to generalise about dryland rivers and raises questions about whether it is necessary (or even desirable) to consider dryland river systems separately from those in other climatic zones. Indeed, as noted in the introduction to this volume, the recent shift away from the study of morphogenesis within specific climatic regimes (e.g. Tricart and Cailleux 1972) towards the study of geomorphological processes per se (e.g. Bates et al. 2005) has largely undermined the distinctiveness of desert geomorphology. This is not to say rivers draining different climatic regions do not differ in aspects of their behaviour. They clearly do, as exemplified in several reviews of tropical (Gupta 1995), periglacial (McEwen and Matthews 1998) and dryland (Graf 1988; Knighton and Nanson 1997; Reid and Frostick 1997; Tooth 2000a) fluvial geomorphology. However, given the diversity of dryland river mor-

Investigating the interaction between rivers and sand dunes in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran
Extended abstract 1- Introduction Fluvial and aeolian processes are important factors in changing the surface of morphology in the Earth. When rivers and sand dunes meet, the transportation of sediment between them can lead to one of the systems or both of them change. With their connection between river sediment and wind systems there would be lots of reactions, but very little has been st...

Dryland rivers have considerable flow variability, producing complex ecosystems, processes, and communities of organisms that vary over space and time. They are also among the more vulnerable of the world's ecosystems. A key strategy for conservation of dryland rivers is identifying and maintaining key sites for biodiversity conservation, particularly protecting the quantity and quality of flow...
متن کاملEcological roles and threats to aquatic refugia in arid landscapes: dryland river waterholes
Dryland rivers are renowned for their periods of ‘boom’ related to the episodic floods that extend over vast floodplains and fuel incredible production, and periods of ‘bust’ where the extensive channel network is restricted to the permanent refugial waterholes. Many of these 15 river systems are unregulated by dams but are under increasing pressure, especially from water abstraction and overla...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal Variation and the Role of Wildlife in Seasonal Water Quality Declines in the Chobe River, Botswana
Sustainable management of dryland river systems is often complicated by extreme variability of precipitation in time and space, especially across large catchment areas. Understanding regional water quality changes in southern African dryland rivers and wetland systems is especially important because of their high subsistence value and provision of ecosystem services essential to both public and...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Understanding the introduction history of invasive plant species is important for their management and identifying effective host-specific biological control agents. However, uncertain taxonomy, intra- and interspecific hybridization, and cryptic speciation may obscure introduction histories, making it difficult to identify native regions to explore for host-specific agents....
